Iggy and the Stooges "Ready To Die" 4/30/13

2013-02-25

PRE ORDER "READY TO DIE" ON CD AND LP

Better 40 years later than never:  The follow-up to the first record ever to bear the Iggy and the Stooges logo--the immortal proto-punk masterpiece Raw Power--will finally be out April 30, when Fat Possum Records releases the all-new Iggy and the Stooges studio album, Ready To Die.

Ready To Die finds Iggy Pop,guitarist James Williamson and drummer Scott "Rock Action" Asheton reunited for a full album of all-new material for the first time since the legendary Raw Power sessions, with Mike Watt filling in for the late Ron Asheton on bass.  The results are the closest thing to a time capsule to 1973--or at least to Iggy's subsequent efforts with Williamson, including 1977's Kill City and 1979's New Values--that rock 'n' roll is likely to proffer in this millennium.  The new album's opening one-two of "Burn" and "Sex & Money" pair sublimely blunt and self-explanatory subject matter with back alley razor-blade guitars and a troglodytic rhythmic stomp as intensely single-minded as Iggy's lyrical statements of intent.  Elsewhere on the album, anthems abound in the form of the most dead-on rallying cry for the lower-working-class dispossessed to date--the succinctly and aptly titled "Job"--as well as a title track that mixes a signature Iggy Pop mission statement of angry desperation with guitar pyrotechnics that recall those halcyon opening salvos of "Search & Destroy."

Just as Iggy exhumed the original Stooges name when he reunited in 2003 with the Asheton brothers, the revival of the Iggy and the Stooges moniker that first appeared on the cover of Raw Power heralded the return of guitarist James Williamson to the fold in 2009, or as Iggy put it then "although 'the Stooges' died with Ron Asheton, there is still 'Iggy and the Stooges'."  As far as the decision to record and release a new Iggy and the Stooges album for the first time since 1973, Iggy recently commented:

"My motivation in making any record with the group at this point is no longer personal.  It's just a pig-headed fucking thing I have that a real fucking group when they're an older group they also make fucking records.  They don't just go and twiddle around on stage to make a bunch of fucking money..."

Stream Water Liars "Linens"

2013-02-10

Wyoming is in stores March 05 on Big Legal Mess Records. PRE ORDER HERE. The song "Linens" premiered at SPIN last week.  Here's what they had to say:

The Mississippi boys in Water Liars seem to have a pretty firm grip on a lonesome sort of sadness. New song "Linens" takes its name from a mundane household staple that a man can take for granted when he has access to 'em (traditionally via mother or mate), a source of almost mystical warmth and comfort for a real rolling stone like this little ditty's protagonist. Singer-guitarist Justin Kinkel-Schuster coos a country ballad, complete with the intimate details of a pioneer-style breakfast being prepared (biscuits, bacon, coffee), but no matter how much he longs to revel in domestic bliss, the road calls to this character, and urges him to leave. Drummer-vocalist Andrew Bryant meets his pardner for some beautiful harmonies between verses. The pair have prepared an album's worth of similarly spare Americana gems and it's called Wyoming, due out March 5 on Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum. It's certain to have them living on the road for months to come.

Youth Lagoon Announces "Wondrous Bughouse", due March 5 Worldwide on Fat Possum

2013-01-04

Trevor Powers, whose stage name is Youth Lagoon, began writing his debut album The Year of Hibernation in 2010.  Based around the idea of psychological dysphoria, Powers tried to document the trails of his mind through songs of minimalism and hypnotic ambiance.  Powers later described his writing process as "my mind communicating with me, not the other way around...it can take me to scary places but I've realized those bizarre thoughts I have don't define me."  After signing with Mississippi-based label Fat Possum Records in 2011, he toured much of the following year before going back into solitude to write.

Wondrous Bughouse, Powers' sophomore album (due March 5 worldwide via Fat Possum), was spawned from what he describes as "becoming more fascinated with the human psyche and where the spiritual meets the physical world."  During the time he wrote, Powers became intrigued with the metaphysical universe and blending those ideas with pop music.

"Youth Lagoon is something so personal to me because writing music is how I sort my thoughts, as well as where I transfer my fears," explains Powers.  "My mental state is usually pretty sporadic... a lot of this record was influenced by a fear of mortality but embracing it at the same time.  Realizing that human life is only great because it is temporary.  Experimenting with ideas about dimensions.  I'm not a gifted spear, so explaining things is difficult for me.  But music always makes sense."
