Friends "Manifest!" In Stores June 05

2012-04-11

After beaming out of Bushwick in 2011 with two buzzworthy singles and videos plus a reputation for turning live gigs into spontaneous DIY parties (and vice versa) Brooklyn quintet Friends will release their debut album Manifest!, June 5th on Fat Possum Records.

The album was produced by the band – singer Samantha Urbani, multi-instrumentalists Lesley Hann, Matthew Molnar, and Nikki Shapiro, and drummer Oliver Duncan.  They recorded its twelve tracks between last summer and this spring with engineer Daniel Schlett at Strange Weather studios in Brooklyn.

Manifest! aims both to live up to and to defy the promise of those first singles – “Friend Crush” and “I’m His Girl” – over the course of a thirty-eight minute long player.  “ A new track, “Mind Control,” mixed by Grammy winner Paul Epworth, made its worldwide debut this week, as the “Hottest Record in the World” on the UK’s premiere primetime radio show, BBC Radio One’s Zane Lowe.

The Walkmen "Heaven", In Stores June 05

2012-03-29
PRE-ORDER HEAVEN HERE

Fat Possum Records is excited to announce that celebrated New York quintet The Walkmen will release their new album, Heaven, on June 5, 2012.  The record is the band’s sixth and was produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Shins, Band of Horses) in Seattle.  On May 3, they will headline The National curated Crossing Brooklyn Ferry at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.  In July they will support Florence And The Machine on their North American tour.

The Walkmen just celebrated their 10th anniversary and are still comprised of the same members that started the group in 2001 – drummer Matt Barrick, multi-instrumentalist Pete Bauer, singer Hamilton Leithauser, guitarist Paul Maroon and bassist Walter Martin. The Fleet Fox’s Robin Pecknold sings harmonies on two songs on the record.

When describing Heaven, Leithauser portrays a band hitting maturity, comfortable in its mastery, after a decade together.  “The detachment you can feel throughout our younger records is gone.  We felt like it was time to make a bigger, more generous statement."

Adds Maroon, “When you’re starting out, you’re sitting there trying to come up with a big idea, but after a while, you learn about the process of writing. You learn about your friends in the band and how they work best.”

It's been ten years since the Walkmen made their debut album, Everybody Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone.   Ten years since they mixed the lovingly recorded analogue tapes down to the cheapest CD burner they could find. Ten years since Leithauser snapped Maroon’s arm in a celebratory wrestling match. Ten years since critics attached them to a New York scene they never wanted any part of. In the spring of 2011, the band played a series of 10th anniversary shows that demonstrated how far they have outstripped their peers: two sets over two hours, no filler, rapturously received.  In contrast, fellow graduates from New York's celebrated rock revival class of ’02 have burned out or faded from view.

The Walkmen are the great New York band of their generation, and in Heaven, they have delivered their third killer album in a row. Although Leithauser argues that “our biggest accomplishment is just being here,” they are making the best music of their career and filling their largest venues yet.

All five members of the band have kids now and if the impact of parenthood is hard to pin down in a single lyric, there is definitely a new openness and emotional honesty to the songs.   Most importantly, the old gang mentality has deepened, becoming something worthwhile and lasting.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve done. We’ve stayed friends and those friendships have grown,” says Bauer. “We have survival experience and real love that children generate in your life.”

Heaven is a definitive statement of purpose and commitment, from a band at the peak of its powers that is finally winning the recognition it deserves.

Eastbound & Down Soundtrack In Stores April 24

2012-03-23

PRE-ORDER EASTBOUND & DOWN SOUNDTRACK HERE

“When my ass was 19 years old, I changed the face of professional baseball. Everyone wanted a piece of my s#*t. Just a man with a mind for victory and an arm like a f@^%*ing cannon. But sometimes when you bring the thunder, you get lost in the storm.”– Kenny Powers

"Each track is hand-picked by The Man himself.  That’s right.  This is the music that Kenny Powers rocks out to when he’s getting ready in the morning.  This is the music Kenny Powers listens to in the late hours, when the night terrors come and we are all children again." – Stevie Janowski

Anyone who was wondering when the ultimate mix tape of the new millennium would finally show up need wonder no longer: It's here.

Or it will be, on April 24 when Fat Possum Records scores big with the two-disc release of the Eastbound & Down Soundtrack, a collection of straight up classics – old and new alike – handpicked by the man, the myth, and legend in his own mind Kenny Powers, who drops over-the-top nuggets of wisdom that will be prized as much as the music on this high-energy compilation. And that's saying loads since the soundtrack, which includes music and dialogue from the show’s three seasons, features primo jams from top shelfers like The Black Keys, Too $hort, The Stooges,   MC5, R.L. Burnside, Kenny Rogers and Lee Hazlewood. On top of all that, the record’s liner notes are written by Kenny’s own personal boy wonder and sidekick, Stevie Janowski.

HBO’s raucous comedy Eastbound & Down is the story of the rise and fall (and fall, and fall…) of former pitcher Kenny Powers as he navigates life after the Big Leagues as a washed up baseball star who hasn’t come to grips with the “washed up” part yet. With an insufferable ego, self-destructive behavior and penchant for profanity, Powers (played to perfection by Danny McBride), is often unlovable, but always entertaining.  From the twisted comedic minds of executive producers Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy, Adam McKay, Jody Hill and McBride, the show’s popularity has created a loyal and enthusiastic following that surged over its first two seasons.  Eastbound & Down is back for more innings, with the third season currently airing Sunday nights at 10:00p.m. ET/PT, exclusively on HBO.

Spiritualized "Hey Jane" Video

2012-03-20

Last week Spiritualized unveiled a trailer of their new video to fans via social media. It was a tantalizing glimpse of what felt like a calm before a storm moment, directed by rising talent AG Rojas.

Rojas who has previously shot for Jamie XX & Gil Scott, Earl Sweatshirt & Emeli Sandé, sets our protagonist Frida amidst a shady, seedy backdrop in which she’s desperately trying to uphold normality for her son. Frida, played by Tyra Sanchez, is perfectly cast as a visual accompaniment to the song’s energy and impact.

Hey Jane” is first the single and indication that new album Sweet Heart Sweet Light is another epic body of work from the anthemic master. It’s been three years in the making for renowned perfectionist Jason Spaceman and the resulting music captured in this first single, showcases them at their most vibrant and sublime.

Clocking in at 8:55 in true J Spaceman style, meticulously produced and arranged, “Hey Jane” is in itself an epic ride.

Other Music Recording Company New Fat Possum Imprint

2012-03-12

Since 1995, NYC’s Other Music record shop has had a big hand in defining the sound of the underground, helping to establish the careers (and career resurgences) of hundreds of artists, with a wide-ranging aesthetic that includes everything from indie pop to left-field electronica, folk, funk, psychedelia, dub, free jazz, post-punk, avant-classical, hip-hop and much more. For more than a decade and a half, through myriad changes in the “biz,” Other has stayed true to their one goal, connecting great unheard music with passionate music fans, and with their weekly new-release newsletter reaching more than thirty-five thousand subscribers, an MP3 download store, a mail-order website, and a busy East Village retail shop, they have become an icon and last bastion of indie retail. Now, in partnership with Fat Possum, Other is launching their own label, Other Music Recording Co., to bring the same varied taste and enthusiasm that has always defined their retail store to this new venture.

Other’s first release, OM-001, drops on April 24: Ex Cops’ debut 7-inch,  “You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb” b/w “The Millionaire.” This new Brooklyn group’s hazy mix of influences draws on vintage British and New Zealand indie, Factory Records and a Velvets/Feelies jangle that is distinctly New York, all with their own sunbaked pop vision. What began as a bedroom-recording project for Brian Harding has been fleshed out into a full band, and Ex Cops are now putting the finishing touches on their debut album in the studio with producer John Siket, due out on Other later this spring

Also due this spring on Other, the debut solo album from Shintaro Sakamoto, the former frontman of the legendary Japanese psychedelic group Yura Yura Teikoku. Over the course of their 20 years together, that band rose from the storied Japanese psychedelic underground to huge mainstream success in their homeland (and cult status around the world), with a wholly original sound that defies definition. The group disbanded in 2010, and Sakamoto set off into uncharted waters on his new solo material, working mostly alone to create a stunning set of quiet, percussive songs that draw on ‘70s folk and AM radio pop from the U.S., U.K. and Japan, as well as folk forms from across continents and eras; How to Live with a Phantom, released late last year in Sakamoto’s own Zelone label in Japan, is an enigma and an instant classic that blew so many minds at the Other Music shop when a few imports trickled in, they had to release it themselves.

Other Music Recording Co. will surprise and enlighten fans of underground music with a roster of diverse artists from around the world, releasing new music and under-appreciated classics from their reissue division, and with this strategic partnership with Fat Possum you will be hearing a lot more from Other in the coming months.

El-P "Cancer For Cure" Release Set For May 22

2012-03-09

DOWNLOAD ALBUM TRACK "THE FULL RETARD" HERE

Independent rap icon El-P is set to release his long awaited new solo album Cancer For Cure, at his new home Fat Possum on May 22, 2012. The new album marks his first full length rap album since 2007’s critically acclaimed I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, though El-P’s rap trajectory has been on a steady ascent following a prolific year that saw high profile appearances on Das Racist’s mixtape and debut album, a hugely buzzed Adult Swim single “Drones Over BKLYN”, a verse (which made Stereogum’s top 10 guest verses of the year) on one of the year’s biggest online hits, Mr Muthafuckin’ eXquire’s “Huzzah”, among several other honors. The record is arriving hot on the heels of the new Killer Mike album R.A.P. Music, which El-P produced in full and is already making huge noise with its first single “BIG BEAST (featuring BUN B, T.I. and TROUBLE)”, which was awarded Pitchfork's rare Best New Track designation.

Cancer For Cure takes another huge leap forward from the production work of his 2010 instrumental album weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixxx with a bombastic collision of synths, bottomless bass tones, live instrumentation, ear-worming melody, and tightly coiled drum patterns, setting the standard for hip hop production higher than ever.  The obvious diversion from the previous album is the presence of El-P’s ever-developing vocal style, continuing to raise the bar on his already highly verbose flow that swiftly and muscularly navigates a rapidfire explosion of syllabic conundrums and quick-witted elocutions full of heart, purpose, style and grit. Rounded out by feature appearances by a host of high profile guests including Killer Mike, Danny Brown, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Paul Banks (Interpol), and more this will easily be one of the year’s most talked about albums.

2:54 Self-Titled Debut Album Release Set For May 28th

2012-03-07

   2:54 - You're Early by 2:54 Band

Over the past year 2:54 -sister duo Colette and Hannah Thurlow – have established themselves as one of 2012's most important breakthrough UK bands. Following their signing to Fat Possum in the US last week, with the announcement of their eponymous debut album they're preparing to unveil the writing and recording work that's occupied much of their time since the band's inception, and fans of their unique and enveloping sound should prepare to have their expectations obliterated.

Occupying a low-lit, vivid space, they unite a distinct concoction of ideas and influences that taps a rock and punk lineage notoriously anchored by the likes of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss. However, their sound neatly neighbours the darker, atmospheric reaches of today's R'n'B finest, as well as timeless walls of sound. The fact 2:54 have picked up fans from all the above worlds and more is testament not only to their sophisticated and nuanced tastes, but just how compelling a proposition the music they make is. Yet it's only now, with this their first full-length offering that the power of what they do will be revealed for all to see.

The Thurlow sisters taught themselves to play guitar as teenagers, but it wasn't until the closing moments of 2010 that the very first lo-fi 2:54 home demos leaked onto the web, prompting a flurry of critical acclaim that's only ever grown with the band. They became the act that all the best bands around wanted on the road with them, touring with everyone from Warpaint and Wild Beasts to Melissa Auf De Maur, Yuck, The Maccabees and most recently, The Big Pink. Their debut limited seven-inch 'On A Wire' whetted critics appetites, consolidating plaudits that have now reached everywhere from revered US critics like Pitchfork, SPIN, Fader, Gorilla Versus Bear and Stereogum, to UK bibles like NME, Q magazine, Kerrang, and onto the radars of broadsheet press like The Guardian, The Times and The Independent. Signing to Fiction (The Cure, Crystal Castles etc) mid last year, the 'Scarlet' EP gave the world the first taste of the forthcoming long-player with its title track, plus three hard-hitting B-sides. Its hazy, leviathan sound was hypnotically hooky, feeling both alien and familiar at the same time. The Pitchfork premiere of their latest single 'You're Early' last week saw 10 thousand hits in 24 hours - simultaneously announcing a US signing to Fat Possum (Spiritualized, Wavves, Yuck etc)- and displaying a more groove-focused side to the band, a brazenly infectious stormer of a song.

Recorded mostly by Mercury-winning producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey etc), and all mixed by the legendary Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine In Nails etc), their debut album collects together a cohesive and captivating selection of highlights from their already burgeoning catalogue. The 10 songs that together make up '2:54' are ripe with danger and beauty. This is a record that thrums with life, signalled immediately with the gale-force opener, 'Revolving',a real bittersweet blizzard. From then on the sisters Thurlow proceed to mine their own distinctive brand of haunted, freaked grooves and cloud-bursting melody, channelling love, loss and longing to spellbinding effect. This is an album with truly no filler. First spin will leave the propulsive, woozy thrust of 'Easy Undercover's refrains ringing in heads, as will the duelling guitars and surging, urgent cry of 'Sugar's' dance floor rhythms. The smouldering solemnity of 'Circuitry' neighbours the delicate, scorched beauty of 'Watcher' with album closer 'Creeping', realised here in magnificent and malevolent new form that few will be prepared for.

Over the course of its 10 tracks it becomes clear that this is a rarefied, captivating affair, a beautifully sustained exercise in mood and tension that almost feels in a league and scene of its own. It’s a bewitching snapshot of 2:54 thus far and also a glimpse of the heady future that awaits them.
