Bloomington, Indiana’s Hoops Sign to Fat Possum

May 4, 2016

Hoops is a four-piece from Bloomington, Indiana that was started when guitarist Drew Auscherman began making ambient noise music independently. Hoops took full form in 2014 with the addition of bassist Kevin Krauter, drummer James Allen, and guitarist Keagan Beresford and eventually uploaded copies of their tapes to YouTube over the next two years. After much praise from publications like Gorilla VS. Bear, My Old Kentucky Blog, and Gold Flake Paint, Hoops released “Feelin Fine” which appears on the band’s most recent release, HOOPS #3.

In February, Fader premiered, “Feelin Fine”, writing “[the song] is an aural capsule of summer; it’s built on speedy, luminous guitar work and some murky melodies—the latter a little bit reminiscent of Real Estate’s groggy earliest output.” NME proclaims that the song, “instantly stood out to [us], sounding about as lo-fi as you can get but mightily ambitious, and with super strong melodies all over the place.”

“A shimmering and playful mix incorporating the best bits of acts like Felt and Ariel Pink – instantly stood out to me, sounding about as lo-fi as you can get but mightily ambitious and with strong melodies all over the place” – NME
“For our money, the songwriting is consistently as strong as the stuff with which it will inevitably be compared — Mac Demarco comes to mind — and there are legit flashes of brilliance to be found in the tapes.” – Gorilla vs Bear
