The lineup is Kimbrough on vocals and guitar, Garry Burnside on bass, and Kenny Malone on drums (it's a family business around this area, and you'll find Burnsides and Malones all over Fat Possum's releases). All Night Long is a big, scruffy racket of an electric blues album, and it's fantastic material, a mix of charging, biting rhythms, intense slow blues, hollerin', stompin' and moanin'. The lack of studio polish is a big plus here -- producer Robert Palmer was absolutely right to give this to us flubs and all -- and the energy is wonderful. A year later, his family moved to Natchez and from there to Woodville, Mississippi, a small woodsy town forgotten by time (evenby Mississippi standards). Robert’s father owned a grocery store and it was there, on the porch, where Robert heard Scott Dunbar play and sing, as well as another performer named Pig. Robert’s first guitar was a gift from his mother; it was new, from Sears and Roebuck, and had pictures of red cowboys on a white body. When Robert heard the electric sounds of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Howlin’ Wolf, he lost interest in Scott Dunbar’s pre-war style. Robert wanted to catch up to the rest of America.

In 1958 Robert was in the house band at the State Line Club (Mississippi and Louisiana) and stayed loyal until it burned down, giving him little choice but to sign on at the Black Cat Club. In hope of earning more money, Robert went modern; he tightened up the same band, named them the Impalas, hired a saxophonist and added Sam Cooke and Chuck Berry numbers to their set lists. But the Impalas just weren’t meant to be– no matter what they added to their routine, or how many long, hard tours they made through Mississippi and Louisiana. Robert Cage weighed almost 200 pounds when he started the Impalas and at quitting time weighed in at less than 100. Thank you very much, whiskey.

In 1970 Robert married Minnie and began full-time work as a diesel mechanic. Robert continued gigging at local parties with an occasional club date. Many saw it as an unusual move for a label with a roster primarily made up of aging African-American bluesmen to sign a Scottish band with a reputation for writing racist, sexist, generally misanthropic songs. However, the folks at Fat Possum were clued-in enough to know that the Country Teasers use incendiary lyrics as a way to exaggerate hot-button issues in such a way as to make obvious just how ridiculous it would be if they (or anyone else) truly subscribed to such bigoted beliefs -- exaggerated social satire much in the vein of Jonathan Swift's infamous address of homelessness, A Modest Proposal. Pristine in production and performance in comparison to earlier efforts, for the first time on a Country Teasers record, all of the instruments can be deciphered, including the addition of piano on several songs, and most of Ben Wallers' lyrics can be readily understood. Whereas the sheer racket of earlier releases would have you believe otherwise, the Country Teasers are actually talented musicians. While the winding-down music box-paced, fractured country discord is still in place, Wallers and co. (revamped following Satan Is Real Again) seem to have matured a bit on this record, taking a break from their usual noisefest to slow things down and include songs that are, at times, rather beautiful. Case in point is the album's third song, "David I Hope You Don't Mind," written in the form of letters exchanged between Wallers and an ailing musical idol, it marks perhaps the first song on which Wallers actually sings. Proving that the "country" in the band's name has more to do with classic country & western than the new wave of pop-country drivel, Wallers offers up a surprisingly effective though out of key cover of Tammy Wynette's "Almost Persuaded" (1995's Pastoral -- Not Rustic found the band covering Wynette's "Stand by Your Man"). Both songs are written from a woman's perspective, and Wallers performs them accordingly. "Hairy Wine" seems to be an anti-heroin, song in which Wallers declares "I like the swastika, I also like the Jew/I like the negro and the KKK too...The only type I don't like is you, when you are a junkie," while the oddly pretty, musically almost Guided by Voices-like, "Golden Apples" finds him pointing out flaws in his bandmates and declaring himself "the perfect image of mankind, made by god to remind him of his son." Wrapping things up is the hypnotic, nearly epic "Song of the White Feather Club Secretary." A favorite allusion of Wallers, the White Feather Club was the dubious distinction put upon men who failed to promptly enlist in the British military circa 1914. Women gave these men white feathers, marking them as cowards, as a means of guilting them into enlisting.
-Karen E. That said, Davis doesn't really sound like anyone else on the label...nor any other for that matter. His angular, atonal bottleneck guitar playing and garbled vocals are bound to offend many fans of slick, contemporary urban blues, but for a raw taste of the Delta you need not look further. Although the songs and performances on The Horror of It All rank a notch below those on 1994's Feel Like Doin' Something Wrong, it's still a strong outing. Davis goes it alone with his guitar on most of the tracks; joined only by drums on one song; and drums, bass, and second guitar on another. Yet, despite the sparseness of the instrumentation, the album offers more variety than most of the contemporaneous releases on the label. Davis veers comfortably from the type of hypnotic, droning blues favored by deceased labelmate Junior Kimbrough on tracks like "The Horror" to John Lee Hooker-like boogies such as "I Want You." Mostly, though, Davis sounds like no one so much as himself. As per usual with Fat Possum Records releases, even the most familiar blues on the album (e.g., "Keep on Snatchin' It Back, "Coon Can Mattie") are listed as originals, and one song ("If You Like Fat Women") is reprised from the earlier album. None of which matters, of course, when the performances are this spirited. Davis manages to make each of these songs his own. At the time the album was recorded, Thompson was a 24-year-old guitar phenom touted as the next big thing by many blues critics. The artist hasn't been heard from since, which is a crying shame given his talent.

While the tunes here are standard blues-rock fare, Thompson's guitar playing is far from ordinary. He marries the down-home funky blues with a rock-oriented guitar style strongly derivative of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King. Thompson uses a quarter instead of a pick to coax some powerful, metallic sounds out of his Stratocaster. He also coats his strings with WD40 so his fingers can glide more easily along the frets. The result is a hard-rocking blues recording peppered with scorching licks, both on electric slide and conventional electric guits.

Recorded in a one-day session at Jimmy's Auto Care in Oxford, Miss., Little Dave is a raw but accomplished album. Thompson's style is ferocious but not overly flashy. And when he sings about troubled times on songs like "I'm Having It So Hard" and "Got a Bad Feeling," he draws on personal experiences. Before he turned 25, Thompson survived two car crashes, a couple of jail sentences, a gunshot to his thigh, and a razor stabbing. -Ed Kopp allaboutjazz.com

1. Hezekiah Early and Elmo Williams are both semi-professional musicians, but both play and sing as if their life depended on it, with force and power. The blues this duo plays are decidedly modern (even post-modern), and would appeal to any fan of Sonic Youth's white noise rock and Captain Beefheart's Dadaesque R&B. Williams' guitar on "Hoopin' and Hollern'" sounds like it was played through a completely fired amp, and Early's harp on "Insane Instrumental" sounds like a trucker grinding gears. But that doesn't mean the duo can't conjure up some soul. It occurred in the early afternoon, while he was driving a tractor in the same fields he’d worked most of his sixty years. For all of 1995 and most 1996, Fat Possum tried unsuccessfully to convince Asie that the world outside Mississippi needed to hear him. But despite living below the poverty level and desperately needing the easy money of a gig, he could not be lured away from Washington County for more than a couple of hours.

Fat Possum succeeded in recording Asie twice: once at Junior Kimbrough’s club, and once at Jimmy’s Auto Care, Fat Possum’s old studio. Obviously, all the songs on Worried were recorded during these two sessions, and originally intended to be demo tapes. At the time, all we knew about Asie was that he lived in a shotgun shack — no phone, no a/c; and that whenever the fields were dry enough for tractor tires, he was working in them. When they were too wet, Asie was impossible to find. He lived in Holly Ridge almost all of his life and, like his father before him, spent Saturday nights playing in one of the two small grocery stores that qualify Holly Ridge for a name on the map– a place, instead of just a county-road intersection.

1. The black hat-sporting ex-con from Mississippi didn't get serious about music until he was in his late sixties and he still doesn't take anything seriously as he improvises his way through many of these songs. Musically, he keeps everything as simple and spare as can be; no solos, just jagged guitar riffs set to his partner Spam's primitively unadorned drumming. The record begins with T-Model banging on a wooden box on "If I Had Wings, Pt. 1" and talking madness about trying to get a drink of water and being attacked by various reptiles and women he attempts to hit on. Then comes the extremely catchy guitar riff from "To the Left to the Right," a frenzied, juke-joint dance number. There's also the harsh, out of tune "Here Comes Papa" and the wacked and very funny "These Eyes." Though it's not really essential to the record, producer Jim Water's noisy remix of "Pop Pop Pop," based mostly on a riff from "Here Comes Papa," is groovy. But T-Model Ford is in no need of a club remix. He's got everything down perfect and the wild blues that flow naturally from him are as real and feisty as blues music gets.
-Adam Bregman Allmusic.com

1.
